The No-Year-Zero Rule

The standard calendar has no year 0 — the year before 1 CE is 1 BCE. Because of this, a century does not run from ...00 to ...99 the way a base-10 counter would. Instead, it runs from year (N-1) × 100 + 1 to year N × 100. That is why the 20th century covers 1901–2000 rather than 1900–1999, and the 21st century began on January 1, 2001, not 2000.
