Solving the Lunar New Year Boundary Problem

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese lunar year does not begin on January 1st. It begins on the Lunar New Year, a date that shifts every year between January 21 and February 20. A person born in January or early February of a given year may actually belong to the previous year's animal — for example, January 15, 2023 falls before that year's Lunar New Year of January 22, 2023, so the correct animal is Tiger (2022's animal), not Rabbit. This calculator checks a bundled table of Lunar New Year Gregorian dates so this edge case is resolved automatically instead of guessing with a fixed January 1st cutoff.

How the Calculation Works

The zodiac animal is derived from the Earthly Branch cycle: (year − 4) mod 12, anchored so that year 4 CE (and every 12th year after it) lands on Rat. The element and Yin/Yang polarity come from the Heavenly Stem cycle: (year − 4) mod 10, where the stem's parity sets Yin (odd) or Yang (even), and the stem pair maps to one of the 5 elements. Combining both cycles produces the full 60-year Sexagenary cycle — for instance, 1984 is Jiǎzǐ (Wood Rat, Yang), the first year of its 60-year cycle, with the same combination recurring next in 2044.

Compatibility Comparison

Enter a second birth date to compare two zodiac animals using three classical pairing charts: the Six Harmonies (the strongest, most naturally compatible pairs, such as Horse and Goat), the Three Harmonies triads (complementary groups of three, such as Tiger, Horse, and Dog), and the Six Clashes (animals sitting directly opposite each other in the 12-year cycle, such as Rat and Horse, traditionally seen as a more challenging pairing). Any combination outside these charts is labeled Neutral.

Hourly Shichen Animal

Traditional Chinese astrology (Four Pillars, or BaZi) also assigns an animal to the two-hour block a person was born in, called a Shichen. The 12 blocks start at 23:00 with the Rat Hour and cycle through all 12 animals every 24 hours. Enabling the hourly toggle and entering a birth time reveals this hour animal alongside the main year animal.

Supported range for boundary correction
Precise Lunar New Year boundary correction covers birth years 1900 through 2050. Outside that window, the animal, element, and Sexagenary name are still calculated correctly from the calendar year, but the exact January/February cutoff cannot be verified.
