Before scoring

Headings carry no full stop, so leaving them in merges them into the sentence that follows and inflates every sentence-length average. Stripped list items get a full stop added so each one counts as its own sentence. Sentence splitting is abbreviation-aware — Dr., e.g. and U.S. do not break a sentence, and neither does a decimal point.

Dale–Chall and Spache are defined against published familiar-word lists of about 3,000 and 1,000 words that are not redistributed here. This tool checks a roughly 1,700-word list assembled for it instead, which marks slightly more words unfamiliar and so reads a little harder than the official scores. The other seven formulas need no word list and are computed exactly as published — though all five syllable-based ones inherit the syllable estimate, which is a spelling heuristic rather than a pronunciation dictionary.

Lexical density is the share of words that are not function words — a rough measure of how much information each word carries. Polysyllabic, complex and unfamiliar are three different counts on purpose: SMOG counts any word of three or more syllables, Gunning Fog excludes proper nouns and regular -es, -ed and -ing endings from that set, and Dale–Chall ignores length entirely and asks only whether the word is on its familiar list.

Flesch Reading Ease

0–100, higher is easier

Rudolf Flesch, 1948. Runs 0–100 with higher meaning easier, and is the score most style guides quote. It only looks at sentence length and syllables per word, so a short rare word counts the same as a short common one.

Flesch–Kincaid Grade

US grade level

Commissioned by the US Navy in 1975 to rate technical manuals. Rewrites Flesch Reading Ease as a US school grade, from the same two inputs — so it shares the same blind spot about word familiarity.

Gunning Fog Index

Years of formal education

Robert Gunning, 1952, written for newspaper editors. Averages sentence length with the share of words of three or more syllables, excluding proper nouns, easy compounds and words that only reach three syllables through an -es, -ed or -ing ending.

SMOG Index

US grade level

Harry McLaughlin, 1969 — Simple Measure of Gobbledygook. The standard in healthcare communication. It was calibrated on samples of 30 sentences, so on shorter passages it is an extrapolation rather than a measurement.

Coleman–Liau Index

US grade level

Coleman and Liau, 1975. Counts letters instead of syllables, because letters can be counted mechanically without a pronunciation guess — which makes it the most reproducible score here and the least sensitive to how words sound.

Automated Readability Index

US grade level

Smith and Senter, 1967, built for automated typewriters. Like Coleman–Liau it works from characters per word rather than syllables, but weights sentence length more heavily, so it reacts strongly to long sentences.

Dale–Chall Score

Raw score, mapped to a grade band

Dale and Chall, 1948, revised 1995. The only formula here that asks whether a word is actually common, rather than merely short. Its raw score maps onto a grade band. This tool checks a roughly 1,700-word approximation of the published 3,000-word familiar list, so it reads a little harder than the official score.

Linsear Write

US grade level

Developed for the US Air Force to check technical manuals. Scores a 100-word sample, weighting words of three or more syllables three times as heavily as everything else. Because it uses a sample, it moves in steps rather than smoothly.

Spache Score

US grade level (primary text)

George Spache, 1953, designed for text below about fourth grade — it is the wrong instrument for adult prose and will read low on it. Uses a primary-grade familiar-word list, approximated here, so it is indicative only.

Do not write to the score
These formulas measure sentence length and word length. They cannot see whether the argument follows, whether the reader has the assumed background, or whether the text is true — fluent nonsense scores beautifully. Chopping sentences at arbitrary points and swapping precise words for vague short ones reliably produces worse prose with a better number. Use the score to find the passages worth re-reading, then read them.

Readability Score Calculator – Measure How Hard Your Text Is to Read

Readability formulas do something narrow and useful: they estimate the reading level a passage demands, from nothing but how long its sentences are and how long or how common its words are. That is a crude model of comprehension and a remarkably durable one — the same handful of equations has rated naval manuals, insurance policies, patient leaflets and newspaper front pages for seventy years. This readability score calculator runs nine of them at once, reports a consensus grade level, and shows the sentences and words that produced it.

The nine formulas and what each one actually measures

Flesch Reading Ease (Flesch, 1948) is the one style guides quote. It runs 0–100 with higher meaning easier, and most general-audience writing aims for 60 or above. Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level rewrites the same two inputs as a US school grade. Both use only average sentence length and syllables per word, which means a short rare word counts exactly the same as a short common one — their central blind spot.

Gunning Fog (1952) adds the share of words with three or more syllables, excluding proper nouns, easy compounds and words that only reach three syllables through a regular -es, -ed or -ing ending. SMOG (1969) counts polysyllables scaled to a thirty-sentence sample and is the standard in healthcare communication. Coleman–Liau and the Automated Readability Index count letters instead of syllables, which makes them reproducible and insensitive to pronunciation guesses. Linsear Write scores a hundred-word sample, weighting long words three times as heavily as everything else.

Dale–Chall is the interesting outlier. It is the only formula here that asks whether a word is familiar rather than merely short, by checking it against a published list of words a fourth-grade reader knows. That catches what the syllable-based formulas miss: gross, writ and tort are all one syllable and none of them is easy. Spache applies the same idea to primary-grade text, and reads low on adult prose because that is not what it was built for.

How to read the consensus grade level

The formulas disagree, sometimes by four or five grades, and that spread is information rather than noise. A high Gunning Fog with a low Coleman–Liau means long words in short sentences — dense terminology, briskly delivered. The reverse means plain vocabulary strung into sprawling sentences. The consensus grade level is the median of the grade-based formulas, which is more stable than any single one, and the grade-level ladder plots each formula as a tick so you can see the spread at a glance. A US grade converts roughly to reader age by adding five.

For target levels: general web writing and journalism usually aim at grades 7–9; consumer health information and instructions at grades 6–8; plain-language guidance for public-facing documents typically asks for grade 8 or below. Pick an audience preset and the tool grades the text pass, borderline or fail against that ceiling and lists what to fix first.

Turning a score into a rewrite

A number on its own changes nothing, so the tool breaks the passage down. The sentence breakdown scores every sentence and sorts worst first, with word count, syllables per word and a difficulty tag; the sentence-length histogram makes a tail of thirty-word sentences obvious. The hard-word finder lists the long and unfamiliar words with a plainer alternative where a safe one exists — utilize to use, approximately to about, terminate to end. Long sentences, apparently passive constructions and filler intensifiers are flagged separately, and a rewrite checklist is built from the problems this particular text has.

In practice, sentence length is the lever that moves fastest: splitting the three longest sentences usually drops the consensus grade further than any amount of word substitution, because every formula here weights average sentence length heavily. Use compare mode to put a draft and a rewrite side by side and watch each metric move.

What these scores cannot tell you
Readability formulas measure surface features, not meaning. They cannot see whether the text is organised sensibly, whether the argument follows, whether the reader has the background knowledge assumed, or whether it is true. A passage of fluent nonsense will score beautifully. Writing to hit a target grade — chopping sentences at arbitrary points, swapping precise words for vague short ones — reliably produces worse prose with a better number. Use the score to find suspicious passages, then read them.

Counting choices that affect the result

Sentences are split on full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, with an abbreviation list so Dr., e.g. and U.S. do not create false breaks, and a rule that a period between digits — 3.14 — never ends a sentence. Syllables come from a table of spelling traps plus a vowel-group heuristic, so they are an estimate rather than a lookup. Headings, bullet markers, code blocks and bare URLs are stripped by default: a heading carries no full stop, so left in place it merges into the sentence that follows and inflates every sentence-length average. Bullet items get a full stop added so each counts as its own sentence.

How does the Readability Score Calculator work?

Each formula is implemented from its published equation rather than pulled from a library, so every intermediate number — words per sentence, syllables per word, letters per word, complex-word and unfamiliar-word counts — is shown on screen next to the score it produces. The consensus grade level is the median of the grade-based formulas you have switched on, which is a more stable number than any single one of them.

Which score should I actually pay attention to?

Use the consensus grade level as the headline and Flesch Reading Ease as the sanity check, because those two are what style guides and editors normally quote. The individual formulas disagree by design: Coleman–Liau and ARI count letters, Flesch–Kincaid and SMOG count syllables, and Dale–Chall is the only one that asks whether a word is genuinely common rather than merely short. A wide spread between them is informative in itself — it usually means the text mixes short sentences with long, technical vocabulary, or the reverse.

How accurate are the scores, and where do they go wrong?

Two sources of error are worth knowing about. First, syllable counts come from a table of spelling traps plus a vowel-group heuristic, not a pronunciation dictionary, so a word can be off by one — which moves Flesch, Flesch–Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG and Linsear Write with it. How much text do I need for the result to mean anything?

At least 100 words, and the formulas were calibrated on longer samples than that. Below roughly 25 words a single long sentence can swing the grade by several points, so the tool shows a warning rather than pretending the number is a measurement. SMOG is the strictest case: it was built for samples of 30 or more sentences, and on anything shorter it is extrapolating from the polysyllable count. Everything still computes on short text — you just get told how much weight to put on it.

Are these formulas valid for languages other than English?

No. Every formula here was derived from English prose and calibrated against English school grades, and both familiar-word lists are English. If a fifth or more of the letters in your text fall outside the Latin alphabet the tool says so explicitly. The raw statistics — word, sentence, character and paragraph counts, average sentence length — remain correct for any language written with spaces between words, so they are still useful even where the scores are not.

Does my text get uploaded anywhere?

No. Every count and every formula runs in your browser and nothing is transmitted, which matters when the draft is under embargo or NDA. Your text and settings are kept in your own browser's local storage so the page is where you left it when you come back, and clearing the box clears the copy.
